Quality Trumps Price When Seniors Buy Hats

Men's Wigens Shearling Ivy Cap - The Gustav at HartfordYork.com In a CNBC article, Splurging in Retirement, Colleen Kane looks at the reasons that might make seniors on fixed budgets spend a little more.

Paying more for quality is something any smart shopper will opt for if possible, but seniors tend to be the most insistent group on this point — and that search for quality is evident right across the board, from services like life insurance to retail items such as hats and accessories.

We certainly see this trend at HartfordYork.com, where many of the people who purchase hats are seniors. They may wait for sales, free shipping offers and/or other specials to make the purchase more budget-friendly, but seniors are definitely buyers who look for quality first. They are also loyal to brand names and retailers with whom they have built relationships, a trait that makes senior customers very much valued.

The hat mentioned in the CNBC article (and shown here) is The Gustav from Wigens of Sweden, a well-know and well-respected hat manufacturer. Although it’s a pricier cap as caps go, it’s also made to last in high quality leather and is lined for warmth, with drop-down ear flaps, which means it’s versatile and may be used in many weather conditions. In other words, this ivy cap for men has got the classic style, warmth and durability seniors prefer in winter hats plus it’s a quality piece from a trusted name.

Shopping for Your Hat Online Good for Environment

Wigens Leather Ballcap with Earflaps - The Knut at HartfordYork.com

A recent study shows that carbon emissions are 15 times higher when something is purchased in a store than when it is bought online.

The study adds to prior research which noted a 35 percent reduction in energy consumption and in carbon dioxide emissions when people shop online rather than going to a mall.

It’s the extra travel and packaging of the product that takes the biggest environmental toll when you shop at brick-and-mortar stores. In his article Create More Time & Help the Environment, Dr. Joseph Mercola says:

Typically retailers have products shipped from a distributor to a regional warehouse, and then distributed to individual stores. This requires not only extra energy but also extra packaging. Customers then drive to and from the store, and take their purchases home in another package, typically a plastic bag.

Hats off to all of you tree-huggers who buy your hats online!

Distracted By My Hat

Jonathan Richard Wool Ivy Cap - The Vintage County at HartfordYork.com

A study on “inattentional blindness” is to be published in an upcoming issue of Applied Cognitive Psychology — and its findings are startling (to most).

It seems that people using their cell phones are so distracted, and pay so little attention to things happening around them, that they fail to notice bizarre occurrences taking place. Bizarre like a unicycling clown.

Dr. Ira E. Hyman, Jr. of Western Washington University, is head researcher of the study and says that cell phone users were the group most prone to oblivious behavior (as compared to individuals walking alone, in pairs, or listening to their ipods). Only one-quarter of them noticed the unicycling clown, while pedestrians not not using a cell phone noticed the clown over half the time.

Now, Dr. Hyman, that’s all very interesting and I agree that all cell phone use while driving a motor vehicle should be banned. However — in the interest of science and all that, I think you should know that when you’ve got me in my stockroom, trying to decide between a couple of glorious tweed caps, you could have the entire troupe from the Cirque de Soliel, dancing on stilts, and I wouldn’t see a thing. Just saying.

Cowboy Hats for Rodeo Riders a Thing of the Past?

ยป Cowboy Hats - Men's Greeley Fur Felt Dress Western Hat - The Gentleman RancherRodeo, a sport in which the cowboy hat is as much an icon as a bucking bronco, is also a sport reluctant to require its riders to wear helmets–not that at least half the pro bull riders have a problem with that. In fact, most cowboys agree with the way bull rider Justin Koon used to feel: “I would never put [a helmet] on because I wanted to look like a cowboy, with my boots, long-sleeved shirt and cowboy hat.

Although some riders have excuses like helmets are heavy or they impede vision or don’t really do much to prevent catastrophic injuries, most don’t say anything at all–except they just really, really like their cowboy hats.

I challenge some designer to create a cowboy hat helmet — a hybrid if you will — that is as stylish as it is safe, and let those boys ride!

Searching for Your Head Mate

Cowboy Hats from Hartford York Hats - Men's Greeley Beaver Blend Western Dress Hat - The AficionadoI don’t want to depress anyone, but be prepared to weep at least a little when you read Miss(ed) Manners post, Love and Hat. This is one man’s story of a life-long search for a hat, a seemingly impossible task for one with “pin straight asian baby hair” and “a cone shaped head.”

I can’t even imagine the loneliness of this guy’s head, without the warm hug of a trooper on an earlobe-freezing night or the general sense of uber-satisfaction when admiring the reflection of your own happy self in your new dress western hat.

I’d start a support group, but I’m afraid it would too draining emotionally (and take away from my mirror time).

Oh, well. I hope he takes the advice I sent: Buy a top hat, cone head!

Should Women Remove Unisex Hats for National Anthem?

Baseball Caps from Hartford York Hats - Stacy Adams Leather Ball Cap - The MonroeShort answer: no.

But that’s just my opinion, and the debate simmers in stadiums across the country.

Men, of course, are required by federal law to remove their hats during the national anthem (unless they’re in uniform). Look it up: U.S. Code, Title 36, Section 30. Nothing there about women.

One editorial on the subject concludes: “However, if you’re wearing some sort of unisex hat, like a baseball cap or a cowboy hat, I think the proper thing for a lady to do is take her hat off and hold it over the heart until it’s time to play ball.”

I don’t agree. Men still tend to go by general rules of doffing their hats or at least momentarily touching them in greeting. This polite gesture was never incorporated by the female hat-wearer. Similarly, women did not follow suit when men almost always removed their hats upon entering a building (the usual reason now given is that women’s hats were deemed part of the actual outfit, intricately secured by pins, and should only be removed when the lady’s coiffure could be repaired).

The reason behind the behaviors don’t really matter here. What matters is the hundreds of years of tradition behind who takes off what, where and when.

Thus, the suggestion that women remove their hats, unisex or otherwise, during the playing of the national anthem is simply a nonsensical imposition of a long-standing male tradition upon today’s woman.

(and I’ll tell ya right here and now, my little lady won’t stand for it, and I can’t either!)

How Much Do You Love Your Hat?

Straw Hats from Hartford York Hats - Men's Colonel Littleton Woven Straw Panama Summer Hat - The Lynnville PanamaI’m not one to doubt the claims made at GullibleInfo.com, such as:

One in 264 parents say they love their pets more than their children.

(As a matter of fact, I think some of those parents might have been lying.)

Anyway, the statement made me wonder as to the importance of hats to those who love them. More important than socks, surely. Slightly above ties and watches, I’d hazard to guess. Food? (Depends if there’s dessert).

And what about how women rate the importance of their hats vis-a-vis men? Do men love their hats more than women love theirs, or is it vice versa? Do men love hats more than they love women?

*gasp*

Is it possible that women love their hats more than they love ME? (I mean, men–more than they love MEN.)

Perfectly understandable, and all that, but still. I think I need a bit of a lie down now. With me hat.

Father’s Day Approacheth: Try A Hat This Year

Panama Straw Hats from Hartford York Hats - Brent Black - Montecristi Panama - The $10K MontecristiThe third Sunday of June is Father’s Day (June 17 to be exact this year), and for those of you scrambling for a gift idea that’s slightly more exciting than another Snoopy tie (and you know how much I love Peanuts!), why not get the man a hat?

You don’t have to break the bank, of course, with something uber extravagant like The $10K Montecristi Panama (although I’m guessing it’s likely pay-back time for all the grey hairs you gave the old man). No, you can choose one of the more affordable Montecristi Panama hats–it’s the same hat, the difference being in the fineness of the weave (and the number of years it’ll take you to pay it off).

If you just need some more time to save your pennies before getting Dad a little something, might I suggest taking up residency in Estonia or Finland, perhaps? Father’s Day in those countries isn’t till November, you see.

Bon voyage!

Did You Get Your Easter Hat Yet?

Straw Fedoras for Men from Hartford York Hats - The Borsalino Raffia FedoraEaster’s coming up pretty fast, with Easter Sunday falling on April 8th this year. Where does the time go? The stores have been crammed with bunnies and chocolates, colored eggs and baskets for days now.

Did you get your Easter hat yet?

A hat is one of the only items in a man’s wardrobe where there’s truly a myriad of choice available. And it’s making me miserable.

I mean the Borsalino fedora shown here is a real beaut, and I’m partial to the texture of raffia weave. But then I feel really sorry for all the rest of the hats that won’t be on my head this Easter. Wonderful hats just sitting there…headless…and I start to question my choice.

Like, I wonder why I didn’t choose the snappy Henschel woven toyo, called the Downer High Roller. It’s got a great pinch front and I like the self trim. Or maybe the Jamaican from Scala, a very affordable Grade 3 Panama with an expensive, sophisticated look.

By the way, I have the real answer to why two heads are better than one.

Exactly.
