Hats Have Bumper Stickers Too

Hartford York Hats for Men & Women - Men's Stetson Ivy Cap - The Plaid StandardWhen spending yet another evening lingering over your collection of bumper stickers (saved carefully through the decades), you can see your life flash before your eyes in a non-death-related experience.

From war protests to free love and a little power to the people, not much has changed.

These days, though, being somewhat mellower (and also taking to heart the slightly discomforting finding from Gullible Info that car owners who put bumper stickers on their vehicles score 14 points lower on IQ tests), I limit myself to only one slogan, near and dear to my heart.

IF THEY DON’T HAVE HATS IN HEAVEN, I AIN’T GOING

Did You Know…? (a little Cool Quiz hat trivia)

Hartford York Hats & Accessories for Men and Women - Women's Scala Cloche - The Renaissance HatFrom Cool Quiz (the self-proclaimed world’s largest trivia site), here are a couple of hat-related didja ya knows:

Did you know that ladies in Europe took to wearing lightning rods on their hats and trailing ground wires? The fad began after Benjamin Franklin published instructions on how to make them, in his almanac, Poor Richard Improved, in 1753.

(Doesn’t really answer the all-important question of why…)

And did you know that you too can live in a town named after a hat? I found:

  • Cocked Hat, Delaware
  • Hi Hat, Kentucky
  • Mexican Hat, Utah

Gosh, I’m gonna propose a whole slew of new town names! How does Porkpie, Pennsylvania grab ya? And what about Fedora, Florida? Newsboy, Nevada? Cloche, Connecticut?

Oh, I’m on a roll, I tell you. A roll!

Walking Hats, Wyoming.
Trooper, Tennessee.
Cowboy Hat, Colorado.

Research Proves Hats Are Beautiful

Hartford York Hats & Accessories for Men and Women - Women's Faux Fur Coat With Hood - The Vintage Valley Hooded CoatThe easier it is for the brain to process, the more beautiful people rate the item.

That, in a nutshell, says Piotr Winkielman of the University of California, San Diego, is what his team of researchers have concluded in their report published in the current issue of Psychological Science. Out of the nutshell, Winkielman elaborates:

What you like is a function of what your mind has been trained on. A stimulus becomes attractive if it falls into the average of what you’ve seen and is therefore simple for your brain to process. In our experiments, we show that we can make an arbitrary pattern likeable just by preparing the mind to recognize it quickly.

Hats and hoods have been covering heads for eons. We’re used to their various shapes and silhouettes. Thus, hats are not only easy on the eyes – they’re easy on the mind.

Get your hat on. You’re beautiful.

Hat Wearers Have Fewer Regrets – Survey

Hartford York Hats & Accessories for Men and Women - Men's Milano Fur Felt Dress Western Hat - The Black DiamondA recent national survey found more people regret stopping playing a musical instrument than any other regret.

This finding issued by GullibleInfo.com recently is unfortunate, as I have conducted a survey of my own, and have found the results to be quite different.

To wit: more people regret that they no longer wear hats than any other regret.

The scientific methodology I used: I showed bigger-than-life pictures of really cute kids in cowboy hats to people in the mall. Nearly everybody stopped to admire and comment, and I asked all those sans hats two questions:

1. Why did you stop wearing hats?

and

2. Do you regret it?

The good news here of course is that — unlike music — a hat-wearing habit is quite easy and fun to re-establish.

Do it today!

Lose Your Brolly – Wear a Hat

Hartford York Hats & Accessories for Men and Women - Men's Stetson Bucket Hat - The BeekmanThe breezy days of fall are wonderful when the sun’s shining and colors are brilliant. However, when winds pick up to face-lift force and pack the added punch of damp and drizzle, it can become downright chilly and very unpleasant.

Go for hands-free weather protection in a snug-fit bucket hat: you’ll never again have to do a Mary Poppins fly-away imitation or fight a losing battle with your suddenly-lethal inside-out umbrella.

You may wish to match your tight weave hat with weather-appropriate footwear. I just read one girl’s preference: “A man in a hat is sexy; a man in a hat AND rubber waders is sexier.”

How Many Security Hats Do You Have?

Hats for Men and Women at Hartford York Hats - Men's Borsalino Newsboy Cap - The GaribaldiThe average American child goes through five security blankets before the age of seven. Although I don’t usually question the powers at GullibleInfo, I’ve gotta tell you that this average American didn’t have even ONE security blanket growing up.

Of course, you might say (as does a certain therapist on numerous occasions) that hats are simply a form of security blanket for adults.

Okay, (whatever) blah, blah — but I’m sure Linus and his blanky-dragging ilk were not foremost on the minds of Borsalino milliners when they created this unique woolen ivy cap, made from carefully selected scraps.

Just don’t suck your thumb.

Have a good one!

The Era of Jazz Hats

Hartford York Hats for Men and Women - Men's Henschel Leather Porkpie - The Henschel PorkpieThe talent, hard work and dedication behind the beauty sometimes found on the internet–other than my own, thanks–is inspiring (and a little humbling).

Rather in keeping with another recent find of mine, Art Deco is a photographic blog. Instead of focusing solely on hats, however, it celebrates the Jazz Age in all its forms, although this 1929 hat ad from the “Art Goût Beauté” magazine certainly caught my eye.

Vraiment, quelle beauté !

How to ReShape Your Wool or Fur Felt Hat

Hartford York Hats for Men and Women - Men's Bailey Fur Felt Fedora Hat - The JacksonA British blogger, Andy Staines at YellowSwordfishcom, and fellow hat-lover, says his favorite hat’s gone and curled. In his words:

It has, perhaps, been out in the rain a little too much. But the main problem is that the brim has started to curl up losing that perfect shape. The rain damage is easily cured: a good brushing is all it needs and it gets rid of all those water spots. What can be done about the curling brim? Well sadly, probably nothing – the damage is done.

I went back to my own post on hat care to see if I’d any advice, and found it (by way of a link to HatShapers) who confirm that “often a felt or straw hat that loses its shape can be held in a stream of steam and gently reshaped by hand.. .wool often remembers. Do not use an iron–the steam may run out. Hold over a pot of boiling water.

The Monterey Jazz Festival: Blues, Jazz and Hats

Hartford York Hats for Men & Women - Men's Henschel Leather Patch Porkpie - The Patch PorkpieStylish hats have always been integral to The Monterey Jazz Fest, but the cool caps were most plentiful Saturday, according to the Monterey County Herald — “part fashion statement and part as defense against the blazing sun.”

French-style caps, full-brimmed hats, hats with feathers, pink hats, black hats — every kind of hat imaginable was worn proudly. The jazz festival is hardly a costume party, though. “For me, it’s not about matching my hat or my clothes to the music,” said Genie Chochrane of Seaside. “This is the way I dress. I love wearing hats. I wear them everyday.”

My sentiments exactly, Genie. I wear hats because it’s how I dress–it’s just part of who I am. (And because they look really cool).
