Winner of Stetson Cap + Video on How Those Caps are Made

I’ve been so busy admiring the new hats and apparel in the 2012 Fall/Winter catalog, that I nearly forgot to congratulate the winner of twitter competition at Competwition! Chaunyce D. of Chicago is the lucky winner of a fabulous JB Stetson Newsboy Cap, The Wool/Silk/Cashmere Hatteras.

Speaking of JB Stetson, if you haven’t seen how they make those woolen caps at their site in Germany, it’s pretty interesting and there’s a short video, The Making of a JB Stetson Cap, on the process. Templates are used to cut out the cap shapes (by hand), which are then individually sewn. One of the final steps in the process is the shaping of the cap–again, individually and by hand–on wooden blocks, using steam.

I admit to being somewhat fascinated by that one lady’s fingernails…but that’s off-topic and I have to get back to filling orders and dreaming up more Exclusive Hats to Hartford York — have you seen the leather hats from Victor Osborne of New York? They’re stunning. Take a look.

Winter Ball Caps

Stetson Leather Ball CapWhen is a ball cap not just a ball cap? When it’s a winter ball cap, of course! I think we’ve previously established that baseball caps have finally entered the world of fashion with past posts like this and this.

I may have been remiss, however, in imparting to you the fact that ball caps are designed for winter wear as well. From top designers like Wigens and JB Stetson, you’ll find extremely warm and good-looking caps in luxe cashmere and rugged leather, some fleece-lined with drop-down earflaps. They come in solid tones as well as plaids, so you can wear them with pretty much any winter jacket or overcoat.

One person who bought the Stetson cadet style ball cap (pictured above) called The Byers 2, left a 5-star review, saying:

Outstanding. Bought second one for wife. The lining is comfortable and earflaps are perfect. They stop the wind, keep my ears warm, yet hearing through it is excellent. Leather is soft and durable.

Wear it in health, Jon (and Jon’s missus).

Compliments on Your Hats, Sir

Product reviews that you submit at HartfordYork.com cover everything from the quality of the workmanship on a hat (stitching, shape), and the feel of the material to of course its fit and overall look. It’s really nice when customers let us know that they’re getting compliments when they wear their hats too.

Over the past two months, these hats have been garnering the most compliments for the men who wear them:

Indiana Jones Fur Felt Fedora - The Dressed Up Indy This is The Dressed Up Indy, a 100% genuine fur felt pinch front fedora (with 2 1/2″ brim) from the Indiana Jones line of men’s hats.

JB Stetson has been another front-runner in the compliments arena with two of its caps so honored:

JB Stetson Newsboy - The Plaid Wool Blend Hatteras

The Plaid Wool Blend Hatteras, a newsboy cap with a pre-curved, leather trimmed brim and hidden earflap for added warmth when needed, shown here.

And there’s The Modesto.

JB Stetson Ivy Cap - The Wool Blend Modesto

This perennial favorite ivy cap is crafted from virgin wool in a rich, herringbone pattern and has a stitched-down brim for that classic silhouette.

The Carlos Santana hats have been very popular, but the most compliments we’ve seen over the past couple of months have been saved for a wool felt fedora called The Meditation.

Carlos Wool Felt Fedora - The MeditationThis two-inch stingy (and bound) brim is from the Carlos by Carlos Santana collection of men’s hats, and has a classic teardrop crown shape. There’s an attention-getting silver guitar pin affixed to the grosgrain ribbon (note the faux leather overlay trim). The guitar is also featured as a screen print in the satin lining — you’ll have to doff your hat off to show your admirers.

Which one of your hats or caps gets you the most compliments?

Beyonce in the Stetson Roxbury

You know I personally choose every hat you see on Hartford York, and that I attend photo shoots for our catalog (which is why I’m posting this from Mexico, by the way!). It’s this hands-on involvement that makes it all the more exciting when a big-name celebrity is featured in a national publication, wearing one of “my” hats.

This time, it’s Beyoncé, the R&B superstar, (who’s also of course an actress and fashion designer as well as being married to Jay-Z, another Grammy-award winning hip-hop artist and fabulously successful entrepreneur). As a matter of fact, Beyoncé’s not only IN the July issue of Essence Magazine, she’s actually written the cover story, Eat, Play, Love where she, in her own words,

shares how a nine-month break and life’s simple pleasures reignited her creativity and renewed her soul.

The unisex hat Beyoncé is wearing in the spread is called The Roxbury. It’s a lightweight straw hat by Stetson, so it’s great for summer and perfect for a little western sass. And what’s good enough for Beyoncé sure is good enough for me. How ’bout you?

Men’s Hats by Swanepoel and Stetson

Men's Swanepoel/Stetson Fedora - The Carousel Fur Felt Dress Hat at HartfordYork.com

The headwear go-to guy in America is Albertus Swanepoel, and now the South African-born milliner’s on board with the inconic American hat manufacturer — Stetson.

Before arriving in New York City two decades ago, Albertus Swanepoel was already winning awards for his fashion designs in Pretoria. Over the years, he’s worked with top designers including Proenza Schouler, Marc Jacobs, Alexander Wang, Carolina Herrera, Jason Wu and Diane von Furstenberg, developed his own label, and won countless awards and feature spreads in Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue. Stetson is the latest (and greatest) joint venture for Swanepoel, who also works with Barney’s in NYC, The Gap, Coach and Kate Spade.

Interested in fashion since childhood, Swanepoel has definite opinions about hats, which he calls “the orphan accessory”, too often overlooked (even on the runways) until the last minute. Because hats are the most personal of the accessories, says Swanepoel, they’re also the most interesting and can be worn either as a way to be noticed or a way to hide.

The Stetson collection of hats he’s working on (five of which are available at HartfordYork.com) is being created for full-on attention. While he’s insisting that the very recognizable and classic silhouette of the Stetson western hat remain sacrosanct, you’ll see modern touches (with a bit of whimsy) that add the inimitable designed-by-Swanepoel look.

The Carousel is just such a hat, offered in very limited edition by HartfordYork.com. As seen in the May 2010 edition of Vogue, The Carousel is a fully-lined Stetson fedora made stunning by the Swanepoel-designed hand embroidery adorning the brim and hat band trim.

Order The Carousel today for September 2010 delivery. When a designer the caliber of Albertus Swanepoel works with a hat company which himself acknowledges as “the Rolls-Royce of hats”, you know the Stetson Carousel is THE must-have hat of the Fall 2010 season.

No Dirty ‘Black Friday’ Secrets at HartfordYork. Honest!

Men's Stetson Fur Felt Hat - The Cavalry Hat at HartfordYork.comCNN says to watch out for the Dirty Secrets of Black Friday ‘Doorbusters’, saying that

of the hordes of pre-dawn shoppers who line up for hours outside stores on the day after Thanksgiving, most will not bag the best bargains that appear in merchants’ circulars.

That’s just wrong.

Shoopers need to be on the look-out for phrases like While supplies last, Minimum 2 per store, No rainchecks, and/or All items are available in limited quantities. If you see any of these limitations, be prepared to walk away from the store empty-handed.

Big-name stores are guilty of this practice. Sears, for example, is limiting its Black Friday special on an LCD HETV to “only while quantities last; minimum 3 per store; no rainchecks”. They also have a washer/dryer deal but they’ve limited that to 4 per store and no rainchecks.

This practice of short supply is patently unfair to consumers and can actually be physically dangerous as with last year’s WalMart stampede that saw a store employee killed.

Even if you do happen to luck into a store that still has inventory, you should know of another unfair practice. Some of the items on sale are not the standard models, but in fact cheaper derivatives. Consumers are not made aware of this important point, and often wind up getting less of a true bargain.

Trust is a crucial factor in establishing and maintaining any successful business, but especially one that’s solely online like mine. One of the main reasons I started this blog back in 2005 was to have a sort of “over-the-counter” connection between shop owner (yours truly) and customer.

I don’t impose false limits or create short supply. If you order a Borsalino fedora or a Stetson cowboy hat, that’s exactly what you get. Maybe honesty and good service aren’t slick and shiny slogans, but (in my old-fashioned opinion, anyway) there’s just no other way to run a business and succeed as a human being.

The Top Hat For The Top Man

Men's Stetson Pure Beaver Fedora - The Presidential PinnacleIn an article called The Inaugural Top Hat Tradition, Kate Michael of The Examiner wonders aloud if Barack Obama will bring back the top hat tradition. The last President to wear a top hat during an inauguration ceremony was John F. Kennedy, back in 1961, and with the nearly inevitable Camelot comparisons between JFK and Obama, a top hat worn by this President-elect would certainly seem full circle.

Speaking of Presidential hats, we’ve got the limited edition Presidential Pinnacle fedora from Stetson on hand. This is the hat that our cohort Josh from HatForObama.Com is trying to give to the President-elect. For every one of these hats sold over the next several weeks and months, $25 will be donated to the Hats Off for Cancer Charity with a goal of selling 2009 numbered, certificated hats for a total of $50,000.

Hopefully Hat No. 1 will go to the First Man himself.

Cowboy Hats for Rodeo Riders a Thing of the Past?

» Cowboy Hats - Men's Greeley Fur Felt Dress Western Hat - The Gentleman RancherRodeo, a sport in which the cowboy hat is as much an icon as a bucking bronco, is also a sport reluctant to require its riders to wear helmets–not that at least half the pro bull riders have a problem with that. In fact, most cowboys agree with the way bull rider Justin Koon used to feel: “I would never put [a helmet] on because I wanted to look like a cowboy, with my boots, long-sleeved shirt and cowboy hat.

Although some riders have excuses like helmets are heavy or they impede vision or don’t really do much to prevent catastrophic injuries, most don’t say anything at all–except they just really, really like their cowboy hats.

I challenge some designer to create a cowboy hat helmet — a hybrid if you will — that is as stylish as it is safe, and let those boys ride!

J.R.’s Stetson cowboy hat a big draw in Paris

Brent Black Hats at Hartford York Hats - Montecristi Panama - The $10K MontecristiA white Stetson hat belonging to actor Larry Hagman, 75, who once played cunning and philandering oil baron J.R. Ewing on the 1980s U.S. television series “Dallas”, raked in 1,300 euros at a sick kids’ charity auction held in Paris yesterday.

“It’s my favorite hat,” Hagman said before throwing autographed fake dollar bills to the crowd.

OK, let’s crunch some numbers here. 1,300 euros at today’s exchange rate is approximately $1,775.00 US.

HA! That’s nowhere near my $10,000 Montecristi Panama.

The rumours are true. I shot JR.
