The Only Hope for the U.S. Economy: Hats

Men's Fur Felt Fedora - Keenan Fur Felt Trilby - The FinneyI didn’t want to tell you this before the holidays, but NPD Research Group’s Marshal Cohen confirmed that “accessories [like hats] are benefiting at apparel’s expense. . .[and have in fact]. . . now become the primary purchase.”

In her article US Holiday Doldrums May Spur Year of Accessories, Alexandria Sage writes:

Although every holiday sees its share of accessories as gifts — remember all those socks from Grandma? — the category can be especially resilient in weak spending years. While people may forgo an entire new outfit, they are less averse to spending on one special accessory that won’t cost as much yet will bring flair to their wardrobe, the theory goes.

Coordinated winter wear assortments such as scarves, hats and gloves proved a big holiday seller, with the competition not coming so much from clothing but electronics. Can’t say that I disagree with the trend: you got your stylish hat, you got your leather gloves, you got your PDA – so, who cares if you’re naked under your coat?
