Even Seals Wear Hats

Have you spotted a seal wearing a yellow hat yet?

A press release from a Seal Sanctuary in Britain admits that there are many unusual sites to be seen around the Cornish coast.

Perhaps one of the most peculiar is a seal emerging from the sea with a bright yellow hat tag.

“The hat tags are highly visible yellow colour, which makes them ease to see from a long distance, especially cliff tops. The hat are attached with a non-toxic glue, and will stay in place until late winter-early spring of next year and then fall off when the seal molts its fur”, said Curator Dr Glenn Boyle. “Each hat also has a unique letter and number, allowing us to identify each individual pup.”

The Sanctuary’s Animal Care Team would like to enlist the help of beach users and walkers: Hartford York Hats - Men's Stetson Suede Ball Cap - The Chieftainif you see a seal with a yellow hat on its head, please call the Sanctuary on 01326 221361. We need to know what date it was seen, the location, what condition it was in, and the number on the hat. This allows us to track a seal after we have released it.

Well, next time I’m in England, I’ll be glad to help. In fact, maybe I’ll even wear my own yellow hat; you never know if the seals are trying to spot us too.
