Praying in Your Hat

Hartford York Hats - Women's Callanan Straw Dress Hat - The KensingtonScience Daily has published findings that “the integration of religion and spirituality—attending church and praying—may buffer individuals exposed to stress and delay the deleterious effects of high blood pressure.

In a recent study, Dr. Sharon Wyatt and colleagues from the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, found that those African Americans – a group particularly prone to high blood pressure – who were involved with religious activities had significantly lower blood pressure than those who weren’t, despite other factors that increase the risk of this cardiovascular disease. In other words, even overweight church-goers (including those who neglected to take prescribed medications regularly!) had lower blood pressure readings than the non-spiritual study participants.

That’s interesting, Dr. Wyatt. However, I believe you might have missed a crucial factor in your research: to wit, the hat.

When you consider that African American church attendees would “rather attend church naked than hatless“, you must concede the very real possibility that perhaps it’s the hat – and not necessarily where you wear it – that lowers blood pressure.

Just a thought.
