Holy Hats, Batman! It’s Cowboys in Pink!

Hartford York Hats - Greeley Beaver Blend Western Dress Hat - The Beaver Blend GusPink is the new black in rodeo wear – and it’s being worn for a cause that can touch every one of us: your mother, sister, daughter, wife.

In Vail, Colorado, last weekend’s rodeo was designated a “Tough Enough to Wear Pink” night, an event designed to raise awareness and money for the fight against breast cancer. The program, started last October to coincide with Breast Cancer Awareness Month, is the creation of Wrangler and the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association, and “Pink” rodeos have been held all over the country.

Vail Daily writer, Randy Wyrick, questions whether cowboys are tough enough to wear pink, even though “they wear hats, boots, spurs, [and] championship belt buckles the size of turkey platters“.

Andy Martinez, this year’s top-ranked bareback rider, was wearing pink, and says:

Wearing pink isn’t a big deal. It’s for a great cause and you’re not the only one doing it. And of course women like it. We’re doing it for them.

Beg to differ on the last point, cowboy. You’re doing it for every last one of us. Thanks.
