John Callanan: roving (and raving) headwear designer

Hat Designer John Callanan spent a few days shopping the stores of Paris, and reported findings that:

brown is the new black – from chocolate to camel and all shades in between. All of the accent colors are easy to coordinate with brown: turquoise, hermes orange, brick red and purple.

He also says the hot felt profiles are “stingy brimmed fedoras, cloches, berets and floppies”, with the fedoras and cloches “trimmed with buckles, metal or self.” The stitching detail was evident, Callanan continues, “either done directly on the felt or on the trim.”
You know, I like John Callanan – not just his designs, of course – but the way he uses regular words to describe colors. Okay, hermes orange is a bit of a stretch for me, but I get the chocolate and camel brown references, and especially like the brick red. You’ve got to respect a man whose vocabulary just does not include the word puce.
