National Hat Day and Hat Person of the Year

Well, it’s that time of year again! National Hat Day approaches and with it The Headwear Association would like your vote for the Hat Person of the Year.

Last year, Brad Pitt took the honors, but he’s not even in the running this time. In the men’s corner for the 2011 Hat Person of the Year, the nominees are:

Hugh Jackman Johnny Depp Justin Timberlake

Cast your vote before January 15, 2011 on the homepage of The Headwear Association.

Wonder if some of the Glee cast will be featured next year? Chris Colfer, who plays Kurt Hummel, the beautiful boy with the voice of an angel, wears some pretty nifty hats in the show and Matthew Morrison (who is the teacher and Glee club leader, Will Schuester) seems to have an affinity for hats, even in his personal life.

Also wonder why Mad Men’s Don Draper (played by Jon Hamm) isn’t a nominee? The man can rock a fedora!

Talking About Matt Bomer aka Neal Caffrey in his hat on White Collar

Men's Christys' London Fur Felt Fedora Hat - The Trilby at HartfordYork.comRecently I asked an online group I subscribe to what they thought of men in hats, and I’d like to cite a response here from 29-year old Mandi, a marketing director in Tulsa, who said:

I think men in hats are extremely sexy! You mentioned Brad Pitt’s newsboy and Johnny Depp’s fedora, but you failed to mention Matt Bomer, as Neal Caffrey on the hit show White Collar on USA. (And no, I don’t work for USA.) He takes the fedora look to whole a new level! I have included a picture for you to admire…. :-)

I am glad to say that my boyfriend actually GETS that hats are sexy. Of course he loves his old faithful baseball caps, but he can also give Brad Pitt a run for his money in his newsboy hat! And don’t discount the beanie; it’s a great choice when it’s chilly outside. So if your husband/boyfriend hasn’t jumped on the trendy hat bandwagon, tell him it’s time!

I don’t watch much TV, but Mandi wasn’t the only person to mention Matt Bomer (who, for the other person out there who doesn’t know, plays a con artist-turned-FBI informant on White Collar).

DD of Danker PR in Brentwood, Tennessee not only instructed me to watch White Collar because “he wears a hat” but said she too loves men in hats. In fact, DD says she “dated two men that wore hats” and she “loved it”. Why? For the simple reason that “they looked sexy.”

Chiming in from the offices of Maury Rogoff PR in New York, Maury was a little harsher saying:

love men in hats as long as they look EXACTLY LIKE MATT BOMER FROM the USA tv show, WHITE COLLAR. Besides that – - pass.

Gosh, Maury. Not everyone can look like Matt Bomer (or Brad Pitt or Johnny Depp for that matter). But we can wear the same hats!

Hats – the ‘Look At Me’ Accessory

Borsalino Montecristi Panama Fedora - The Vented Montecristi Dress HatIn an article called Pork pies, panamas & trilbies, milliner John Kasriel says the hats are bouncing off the shelves and he puts it “all down to sex, celebrities and, to a lesser degree, cancer.”

The music industry and actors like Brad Pitt, Heath Ledger and Justin Timberlake started it,” he says. “It’s sun protection for some older guys too, but mostly it’s, ‘I want to attract the women. I want to look fantastic. I’ve got confidence. I want to wear a hat’.

Short-brimmed pork pies are especially popular and are selling in pinstripes and double striped fabrics as well as pale coffee colors in linens and cottons and various shades of grey straw, polypropylene or twisted paper weaves.

“Guys are fussy,” says Kasriel. “They don’t just want a hat. They want it this way, up at the front, or that way, down at the back, or a small brim or wider brim, or dents on the side of the crown or not and this color or this band. They know what they want and it’s got to be spot on, perfect. They’ve got something in their mind and they want to look like that exactly.”

He reckons that “something” is usually a mental picture of a hat-wearing celebrity, like Pitt, Ledger, Timberlake, Pete Doherty, Snoop Dog, Kid Rock, Federline, and Hugh Jackman.

And it’s everyone who’s putting the hats on: the 18 year-olds and the 55-year-olds; the heavy metal emos and goths wear their black top hats and bowlers, while baby boomers swear by fedoras and larger brims, and Gen X-ers put their money into trilbies and panamas.

One hatter says the trend of wearing men’s hats is “ready to go ballistic across all levels. We’re going to get to that stage – I think like 50 years ago – when you couldn’t go to the races without a hat.”

Woo With Hats This Valentine’s Day

Women's Dress Hats - Helen Kaminski Hats - The Velour Fur Felt Vania HatAccording to a recent survey by Maxim.com, an average of 6.42 hours is spent by Americans wooing their significant others on Valentine’s Day. This includes preparation and planning time, plus the actual romantic dinner or other special event.

The romance of hats, from the perspective of a man looking at a woman or vice-versa, has never been a point of contention in my experience. When women see Brad Pitt in his cap, they have no complaints; likewise, when men see J-Lo in a picture hat or Daniela Pestova in a fedora, they drool.

For a win-win woo situation, I’d suggest that you wear your own hat and also give a hat to your beloved. That way, you’ll dazzle each other to bits.

The Newsboy Cap’s New Name – Brad Pitt?

Borsalino Newsboy Caps - Men's Borsalino Leather Newsboy Cap - The GiuseppeA New Orleans Times-Picayune article says the “heartthrob humanitarian [that would be Brad Pitt, I'm guessing] and his cap seem to be inseparable.”

He donned a heathered newsboy with jeans and a T-shirt for a recent news conference in New Orleans’ Lower Ninth Ward. He wore a flat cap with a full-length coat for a walk on the red carpet at the “Beowulf” premiere. He grabbed a gray topper for a bike ride around the French Quarter with Angelina Jolie and the kids.

For interviews on “Larry King Live” and the “Today” show, the cap was back. On the “Charlie Rose” show, there it was again.

Why is the newsboy such a popular look with such an assortment of stars? (Besides Brad Pitt, comedian Dave Chappelle, actors Samuel Jackson and Daniel Craig, rapper Notorious B.I.G. and AC/DC singer Brian Johnson are all touted as examples of newsboy-wearing celebrities).

Perhaps the secret to the cap’s popularity is its many permutations. The eight-panel, also known as the Jay Gatsby, comes with a fuller top and a snap-button closure. The Big Apple is the same hat, only with a more floppy shape. Other models are flatter, sitting lower and tighter on the head.

Other suggestions are that the look is classic and a little retro; it’s got a shape that flatters many faces, and it’s convenient too.

As Diane Feen, editor of Hat Life, put it: “Years ago, our fathers and grandfathers wore hats, and they would take them off and put them on a table or hat rack in places. But today, if you go to the movies or a restaurant, you [don't] have to worry about where to put it. With this cap, you can fold it and just stick it into your pocket. It’s perfect for today.”
